Business Strategist Barry Mosley recently attended the 2015 Growth Summit which was aimed at growing the leaders in your business.

The seminar was attended by 2500 attendees from Australia and New Zealand with the key note speaker Jim Collins, world renowned leader in Strategic thinking and thought leadership. Jim is a renowned author and has written or co-written six books on leadership and what makes great companies tick. Some of his better known books include Good to Great, Built to Last, How the Mighty Fall and Great by Choice.

One of Jim's most well-known quotes is that "we can't predict the future but we can create it".

The key theme of Jim’s presentation was on the Characteristic and Behaviours to lead your team to greatness. One of the main messages was that "Good was the Enemy of Great". The message referred to leaders in a company that was doing OK didn't tend to look carefully at the business and make decisions to take it to the next level. Good companies could already be on the road to extinction. Greatness and building a great enterprise is not a feature of circumstance but requires a conscious decision and discipline.

Jim also spoke often about “having the right people on the bus, but more importantly having the right people in the right seats”.

Leadership is not about personality or charisma and leaders that achieve greatness do not traditionally have charisma. Leadership only exists if people follow, who have the choice not to follow.  The X factor of a great leader has the following traits;

- Personal humility
- Hugely ambitious
- Passion channelled outward to something that is not about them.

The single most important trait in a leader is an exquisite record in bringing together the very best people that fit with your principles and passions for your business.

Jim’s presentation was then followed by Liz Wiseman who is the former executive of Oracle Corporation and at the age of 25 was asked by Larry Ellison to establish Oracle University as the global leader for human resource development.  Liz spoke in detail about the two main types of leaders, Multipliers and Diminishers.

Multipliers are leaders that use their intelligence to amplify and grow the people around them. Multipliers are;
- Talent Mangers
- The Liberator
- The Challenger
- The Debate Maker
- The Investors

Deminishers are leaders who think that people won't figure it out without themselves. Deminishers are;
- The Empire Builder
- The Tyrant
- The Know it all
- The Decision Maker
- The Micromanager

The key themes of Liz's presentation followed nicely on Jim's presentation and linked it all together.

Liz was then followed by Verne Harnish who is the founder and CEO of Gazelles, a global executive education and coaching company and is known as the Growth Guy. Verne has been visiting New Zealand and Australia through his association with the Growth Faculty for a number of years.

Verne's message was around establishing routines in your business that enabled you to have clear time to grow your business. His catch phrase was "Routine sets you free".

The other key theme was that growth in your business required focus and discipline and it was important to "Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing".
If you want to grow your business you need to train your people first.

Verne also reiterated that Strategic Planning was about;
- Strategic Thinking
- Execution Planning
- People Resourcing
- Cash Management

The whole seminar flowed well and although the themes were not entirely new they were presented in a way that made complete sense when considering how to grow your business.
